Rydal Park Celebrates 40 Years of Growth in Abington Township

August 25, 2014

JENKINTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA (AUGUST 25, 2014): Rydal Park is marking its 40thanniversary as a prominent local continuing care retirement community in Abington Township, Montgomery County. As the times and trends in senior living have changed in the past forty years, so has Rydal Park.

Centrally located along The Fairway just off Route 611 in Jenkintown, Rydal Park is a full-service continuing care campus, offering independent living, personal care and skilled nursing, and rehabilitative and memory support care. Rydal Park is the largest community within the Presby’s Inspired Life organization, the almost 60-year-old Delaware Valley not-for-profit developer of four market rate retirement communities and 27 Affordable Housing communities for adults aged 62-plus.

“We consider Rydal Park our flagship community, as it embodies our philosophy of providing a dynamic and vibrant experience for adults 62-plus, providing innovative, individualized opportunities that inspire mind, body and spirit,” said Judee Bavaria, Presby’s Inspired Life President and CEO.

The 40-year anniversary of Rydal Park will be celebrated with a series of events. Representatives from local civic and community organizations, businesses and elected officials will attend its “Ruby Soiree” on Weds. Sept. 10, when Rydal Park will be awarded a resolution from Abington Township and a citation from State Rep. Madeleine Dean. A speaker series featuring five prominent Philadelphia-area media figures will take place at Rydal Park during October, and residents will celebrate with special “Founder’s Day” activities on Nov. 12 and 13, including a concert by New York-based jazz band Emily Asher’s Garden Party.

Rydal Park as it is built today sits on 22 acres that were part of the former Baederwood Golf Course. At its 1974 opening, its original residential building, Hillside, featured 231 living units. Rydal has since added three additional residences: Brookside in 1975, Woodside in 1993, and Parkside in 2008.  The Joseph C. Scott Medical Center, a 94,000-square foot all-private room center providing medical, nursing, and rehabilitative services to residents and area community members, was opened in 2011.

Rydal Park continues to look towards the future with an eye on trends and offerings to meet the needs and desires of the next generation of older adults. Today, with 320 independent living apartment homes across four contiguous buildings, it is home to nearly 400 adults aged 62-plus, and employs 425 staff members.

Rydal Park residents are attracted by its close proximity to desirable amenities in Jenkintown, Montgomery County and Philadelphia, along with its numerous events and programming opportunities, housing and dining options, and physical fitness and wellness facilities. Residents are actively engaged in the community, and are known for their volunteer work, including gardening projects, international student sessions and continuing education classes with local high school and college students, their churches and synagogues, and many non-profit organizations throughout the year.
